Sekilas tentang Azerbaijan:
Negara ini adalah pecahan Soviet, yang sebagian besar penduduknya Musliim.
Hubungan Indonesia - Azerbaijan sangat erat, mengingat Azerbaijan adalah importir minyak bumi terbesar kedua setelah Arab Saudi ke Indonesia. Dengan jumlah penduduk sebanyak 9 juta jiwa, negeri ini menghasilkan 1 juta barrel minyak bumi dalam sehari.
Kerjasama ini dilakukan dengan tujuan:
1. Solidaritas Muslim, mengingat bangsa Armenia sampai hari ini telah mengambil satu wilayah di Azerbaijan dan melakukan pembersihan etnis.
2. Mempererat hubungan antar negara, khususnya bidang pendidikan, mengingat Azerbaijan memiliki tradisi akademik yang panjang. Ibukota Persia, negara Islam yang sangat berjaya di masa lalu, sebenarnya berada di Azerbaijan. Hingga hari ini, negara ini memiliki tradisi akademik di bidang teknik yang kuat.
